"ST. MARY'S CHURCH, WHAPLODE
900 YEARS OF NOBLE HISTORY"
IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THIS COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF
OUR MAGNIFICENT NORMAN CHURCH AND ITS ASSOCIATION
WITH WHAPLODE
2025 will see St. Mary’s Church in Whaplode achieve a landmark 900 years since its consecration and two local historians have produced a new book in celebration of this stunning church, and its association with Whaplode.
This compelling book charts the magnificent 900-year-old history of this eye-catching Norman church of St. Mary's, in Whaplode, Lincolnshire. Appreciate the significance of its Saxon beginnings; the majesty of its Norman architectural heritage; the magnificence of its historical monuments and artefacts.
Travel down the centuries post the Conquest from the early Noble French families that helped to establish the Norman church, and the many families thereafter that subsequently supported it.
Through its ‘ownership’ by the Abbey of Crowland, and the colourful, often turbulent, relationships of the various clergy with successive Abbots, and the villagers of Whaplode.
Sense the despair brought on by the destruction caused to the fabric during the English Reformation, and beyond, with years of regrettable neglect, until, finally, even amidst controversy, early 20th century preservation and restoration projects were approved, and with Government help, institutional and private funding, the Church’s heritage was secured for the future benefit of generations to come.
All proceeds from the sale of this book will go to St. Mary’s Church ‘Roof Appeal’ Fund.
